Welcome!

Since 1995, the Community-Music email list has provided a means for people across the world to discuss their passion for making music in a (primarily) volunteer concert/wind band or orchestra. Since 1999, the list has been in place on what is now Yahoo!Groups. The list has been stable there and a complete archive of discussion is available.

Besides the mailing list itself, Community-Music (or, 'C-M' as it is known by its members) is best known for the extensive list of contact information which is available to anyone who is seeking information on a group to join. There are over 1,600 such groups registered in the "C-M Contact List."

Please browse the links below and explore all that C-M has to offer. To access the list or the message archive, you'll need to sign up; simply click on the "Sign up" link below.

TSA standards regarding musical instruments Updated Mar '07

The Transportation Safety Administration has issued updated guidelines to clarify that musicial instruments must be allowed (space and other considerations permitting) as an carry-on in addition to your standard carry-on allowance. Visit the website, print a copy of the information, and check with your carrier to ensure you can take your instrument onboard. TSA's policy tells the SCREENERS what is allowed; the airlines set policy individually regarding carry-ons. Southwest ignores this policy; I have never had a problem with American allowing me or my wife to take our french horns onboard.

Taking a copy of this letter with you should convince reluctant gate agents, security screeners, etc. to allow you to board with your musical instrument. Don't expect to lug your double bass or tuba on-board, but for most smaller instruments this should do the trick. Don't forget to remove anything sharp from your case and put in in your checked baggage.

Note: If the link above doesn't work, it's because TSA has moved it yet again. Do a search for "Transporting musical instruments" and you should be OK.
