The community-music mailing list FAQ, rls 1.1
The Community-Music Email List is for the discussion and distribution of
ideas relating to Community Music Ensembles, specifically community bands
and orchestras.
Since the end of 2003, we've been 900-1000 members. This is a
good number; enough traffic to be useful, not so much as to not be useful.
C-M Position Statement:
Although there are many outlets for the discussion of professional
music problems, little attention has been paid to the backbone of
"classical" music .. the community band and community orchestra.
These groups are usually made up of volunteers who play for the
sheer enjoyment of it. As such, these organizations have problems
that are substantially different than those of a professional
organization.
The community-music email list has been established to address
these problems, and to further the spread of community music throughout
the world. We concentrate on "large" ensembles - not brass/woodwind
quintets, string trios, or the like. We DO talk about both orchestral
and band-related topics.
What is a community music ensemble?
- a group of generally volunteer musicians which plays largely for enjoyment rather than as a profession
- a group which may be partially funded by a community
- a group which may, despite the tag "amateur", or "semi-professional", challenge some local "professional" groups
- For the purpose of this mailing list, a concert band or orchestra.
Foo! I'm not in a band or orchestra? What do I do?
You're always welcome to join the list, but recognize that we focus on concert bands and
orchestras. There are other usenet facilities you should be aware of, as well:
What can we discuss here?
anything relating to a community group, such as:
- funding
- music selection
- conductor searches
- how to select musicians
- retaining key people
- announcements of concerts
- personal music for sale or wanted items
Is this group moderated?
Unfortunately, yes. This is because of the increased abuse of the list
over the years by spammers; see also The Anti-Spam Rule. Between the three moderators, nearly everything is approved, sometimes
in a matter of minutes.
Is there a FAQ for this group?
You're looking at it ...
Will there be a web site?
Yes, at http://www.boerger.org/c-m/
Things available here are: This FAQ, a bit about the Association
of Concert Bands, a listing of Web pages that community groups have,
and a listing of community groups.

Is there a digest version of the list available?
Yes, there is. You can change this by visiting http://groups.yahoo.com/group/c-m and clicking the "Modify My Membership" button.
Normally, mailing list users will receive a message each time one is sent to the list.
For people who are too busy to be bothered by multiple messages each day, a digest
compiles all the messages sent during a day into one semi-indexed, large message, sent
each day whenever there was list mail in the last 24 hours.
How do I send a message?
- Compose your message with your mailer and send it to:
c-m \at\ yahoogroups . com (change the \at\ to @)
or, click here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/c-m/post
How do I find out about community groups in my area?
- Check your local newspaper's "Arts" listings
- Talk to someone you know who's been around
- Band directors/music educators may have information
- Look at the group home pages here
- Look at the Community Music Contact List, which lists some of the groups out there;
- send a note to the mailing list!
- Call the Association of Concert Bands (see next item)
There IS no group locally, and I want to start one. Where do I begin?
The Association of Concert Bands is an international group whose objective
is to have a group in *every* community. You can call them at 1-800-726-
8720; they have a packet which includes John Paynter's "How to Start a
Concert Band". Most of this material would apply equally well to an
orchestra. Thanks to Enoch Moser (76241.446@compuserve.com) for this info.
Who is the list administrator?
Ron Boerger. I've been in community ensembles now
for over 15 years after taking a 10-year rest ;-). In real life, I am
a portfolio manager at Hewlett-Packard in Richardson, Texas. For fun, I play in the
Sherman Symphony Orchestra. From 2000-2006 I was contributing editor for The Horn Call, the
journal of the International Horn
Society.
My co-administrators are Jonell Linholm and Bill Anderson, both of whom have been
members of the list almost since its inception. If they pass on any witty
bits to say about themselves, I'll be happy to post them!
Out of print music
One of the questions that comes up most frequently on the list is: "where
can I find music that is out of print?" Quite often, the Chatfield Brass
Band Library (which has more than just brass band music) can help. You
can contact this fine, non-profit organization at:
Chatfield Brass Band, INC.
PO Box 578
Chatfield, MN 55923

What else do I need to know?
- Have fun!
- Be patient!
- If you don't like orchestra and see a message, just remove it, and the same goes if you don't like bands.
- advertising is frowned upon. You can announce that people can get catalogues, etc. from you, but I'd rather not see wholesale advertising. Of course, if your community group has a CD or something for sale, that's different than someone trying to sell 500 CDs, none of which have anything to do community groups.
- The list is moderated. Most often the only impact will be a short delay between the time you send a post to the list and the time it shows up. Please don't send multiple copies of the same message.

The AntiSpam Rule
Due to abuse by spammers, the following rule has been added:
Any post mentioning Senate Bill 1618; House Bill 3888; the 'Murkowski' anti-spam amendment; or,
containing instructions on how to remove your email address from further 'transmissions' in compliance with government regulations / the Communications Act of 1934 as amended is prohibited from transmission on this list.
Transgressors will be dealt with in the harshest possible manner up to and including legal action. This list will *not* tolerate UCE.
